Bringing your household goods (menaje de casa)
A one-time duty-free import of your used household goods when you move to Mexico.
Why it matters
Without the menaje procedure, imported furniture and goods pay duties and IVA.
Who helps
The Mexican consulate certifies your list where required, and a customs broker (agente aduanal) clears it with ANAM (Mexican customs) at the border.
What to do: Prepare your household goods list for a one-time duty-free import.
Documents
- A detailed list of goods (in Spanish, with brands, models and serial numbers for electronics), passport, INM visa or resident card, and proof of your Mexican address.
Rules (ANAM)
goods must be used and owned for at least 6 months; vehicles are excluded. Temporary residents import their menaje temporarily (it must leave when the residency ends); permanent residents import it definitively with a consulate-certified list.
Common mistakes
- New items still in boxes; tools and equipment for a business; shipping before your residency visa is issued.
Say it in Spanish
- Quisiera certificar mi lista de menaje de casa.
I'd like to certify my household goods list.

Common questions
How do I bring my household goods?
New residents can import household goods once under the menaje de casa rules, with a list approved by the consulate.
