Transfer the utilities
Putting electricity, water, gas, trash and internet accounts in your name (or confirming the account holder) after closing.
Why it matters
Unpaid utilities can be cut off, and the account holder receives the notices. Paid-up utility receipts are also proof of address for residency, banking and permits.
Who helps
You can do this yourself with each utility. A property manager can do it for you with a power or a letter.
What to do: Put the power, water, gas, trash and internet accounts in your name.
Documents and steps
- CFE (electricity): change of account holder (cambio de titular) is done in person at a CFE service center (or by appointment through 071), not online. Bring ID, your RFC if you have one, the service number, a recent meter reading, and proof of ownership (deed or predial). The account must have no debts.
- Water (OOMSAPAS La Paz or Los Cabos): change of account holder at the utility's office with the deed and ID; ask for a no-debt letter. Lots on trucked water (pipa) have no account.
- **Propane (gas LP):** a tank refill service or a stationary tank contract; no government account.
- Trash: municipal service or a private collector, depending on the area.
- Internet: see step 4.9.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the CFE account in the seller's name for years; summer bills jumping to the DAC tariff (step 4.17).
Say it in Spanish
- Quisiera hacer el cambio de titular.
I'd like to change the account holder.
