When your trustee bank changes, or you want to switch

What happens to your trust when the bank merges or sells its trust business, and how to move your trust to another bank voluntarily (sustitución de fiduciario).

Why it matters

Your trust contract, rights and term continue; but where you pay, who signs, and whose fee schedule applies can change.

Who helps

Your trustee bank (and the new bank, if you switch), a notario for the substitution deed, and your attorney.

What to do: Check your trust when your bank merges, or move it to another bank.

If your bank changed (merger or transfer)

  1. Confirm in writing who your trustee is now and ask for the new trust number, if any.
    1. Ask for the new payment instructions and your current fee and arrears status; don't pay into old accounts.
    2. Ask whether your fee schedule and currency stay the same (it's set by your contract; see step 3.7).
    3. Update your records, your property manager and your heirs.
    4. A merger usually needs nothing from you at the RNIE or RPPC, but ask the new trustee to confirm.
